The National Youth Leadership Forum on Medicine (NYLF/MED) introduces outstanding high school students to the world of medicine and to the various careers available in the medical field. Through behind-the-scenes visits and shadowing physicians making rounds in some of the nation’s most prestigious and technologically-advanced hospitals and medical schools, students make connections with medical professionals, discover how medical students learn through “problem based learning” exercises, gain hands-on experience checking vital signs such as blood pressure, learn how to suture and also view surgery.
Students discover medical specialties and primary care with current physicians and patients, explore what life will be like as a resident, and discuss responses to epidemics and threats to public health.
Upon completion of the Forum on Medicine, students can obtain references from physicians they’ve met and shadowed. Students can also request a personalized Letter of Participation (LOP), which highlights their attendance at the Forum. These references prove to be especially valuable in pursuing future opportunities, when showcasing extracurricular experience and achievements, when applying to college, when writing essays and in college interviews.
